Ty Segall - “Melted”
Having one of those days where I’m sure the only way I’m gonna make it to happy hour is with a heavy dose of Ty Segall.
LAYERED - a flamgirlant mixtape
Winter is all about layers. Layers of clothing; layers of ice and snow; layers of blankets on your bed. These layers all have a weight to them, physically and visually. The music I’m drawn to in the darker, colder months of winter also feels like it carries a weight. This mix is made up of songs that feel heavy. By the end you’ll have bundled yourself in layers of melody and rhythm, harmony and distortion, hooks and reverb.
Download the mix or head over to 8tracks to stream it.

Ty Segall - “I Can’t Feel It”
No effin’ clue what words Ty is singing nonetheless what he’s singing about but I’ll be damned if it that stops me from singing along at the top of my lungs. Color me crazy but do you get a solid David Bowie vibe from this track? Listen again… can’t you feel it?
Ty Segall - “Bullet Proof Nothing”
So Ty Segall covered Simply Saucer, my favorite Canadian proto-punk band from the 70’s. I didn’t know this, thanks to Raven Sings The Blues I now do. “Bullet Proof Nothing” happens to be my favorite Simply Saucer track. Actually, it’s one of my favorite songs ever. Period.
Any of you who’ve read my blog for any length of time know my affection for fuzzy garage rock and Ty Segall. I love that he is drawing attention this utterly under appreciated and completely overlooked band.
If you dig this track, give the original a listen. You’ll find it a little gentler; a bit more subtle. The fuzzy guitar takes on a supporting role to a strumming acoustic. Each chorus is ended with two breaks that act like punctuation. And it has a bass line that’ll walk all over you (the best part).

“Bullet Proof Nothing” is off of Cyborgs Revisited which is comprised of an aborted recording session in 1974 and a recording of a live 1975 show, and was released in 1989 - a full decade after Simply Saucer split. One well-received 7” and they called it quits. This posthumous full-length only came about because a fan uncovered enough material to make one.
Great story. Great album. Fucking great song.
Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin - “So, I Went To Beach, Melody”
I just can’t get enough of this perfectly spastic, dysfunctional beach-punk song. It’s loud, it’s raw, it’s in-your-face delivery is so perfectly lewd. Perfect for the girl that prefers the lascivious to the romantic.
Ty Segall - “Pretty Baby”
Ty Segall is like a shot of espresso for your ears - short, more bitter than sweet, and you can feel it working on you within the first few moments. Good Morning.
Summer Burn 2010 - a flamgirlant mixtape
Sometimes a mix takes its own path despite the mixmaker’s best intentions - Summer Burn 2010 is a perfect example. This puppy ended up taking 7 left turns before I called it quits. That could mean it’s a pretty nice listen. Could also mean it’s absolute shite. Either way, I had to end it before it ended me.
Hopefully you’ll hear something new and special. As always, show the bands your love buy checking out a show or buying some swag. They love that sort of thing. And it’s a total win/win.
