LINES : a flamgirlant mixtape

Ever notice how something as simple and innocuous as a line influences our behavior?  Lines are drawn, toed, and crossed.  You get in line, hold the line, and put yourself out on the line.  You either stay within the lines or color outside of them.  Sometimes you got someone on the line; sometimes you take yourself off the line.

Here’s a dandy little mix all about making lines or reacting to them (and one tasty instrumental jam for good measure).  Plus it’s spring and time for a new mix, no?

Click here to give it a listen over on 8tracks.  To download a zip file of the tunes, click here or on the image above.

Cousins - BTR Live Studio

New LP coming out in Spring of 2013!  Fantastic, considering The Palm At The End Of The Mind was one of my favorite releases this year.

Cousins - “Jules”

Sometimes simplicity makes a video that much more awesome.

Cousins - “Secret Weapon”

Oh how I love this band.  This track is from The Palm at the End of the Mind.  An album that will likely end up near the top of my 2012 year end list.

Cousins - “Jules”

A few weeks ago Cousins quietly dropped their latest album The Palm at the End of the Mind.  My love for this band is well deserved.  These Canadians write lo-fi, grungey pop songs with hooks that set deep.  You’ll find yourself humming along to the melodies halfway through each song.  The crooning vocals have this strained restraint that holds the tension even when everyone else is running at full-tilt.  The bellows and whispers are so damn charming and perfectly placed, you’ll want to join in and add your voice.

I find this band to be… quietly anthemic.  Tight, melodic, heavy on the rhythm and plentiful sing-along opportunities, but muted.  Hushed.  And that’s the part that surprises you.  That’s the part that works it’s way under your skin.

Go to bandcamp.  Listen to the whole the album.  Become a fan because Cousins deserves oh so many more of us.

Cousins - “Speech”

One of my favorite Canadian quartets.  If any of you are hitting up SXSW, please see these guys and tell me all about it!

Cousins - “Speech”

My favorite Canadian quartet are back at it with a new 7”.  This gritty B-side has what I want from these guys from Halifax - raw guitar, heavy handed piano, plaintive crooning vocals.  So dig.

Hit up bandcamp to check out the other 3.5”.

Ebb/Flow - a flamgirlant mixtape

It’s a transition time of year.  60 degrees one day, 90 the next.  Passing over recipes that require the oven to be on and going straight for fresh fruits and veggies.  Trading in my red wine for vodka lemonade.  It’s the time of year I find myself going from 0 to 60 and back again over the course of a few days only to repeat it again and again.  Too much to do, brief respite to catch my breath, too much to do.  That’s how things roll before I find myself lockstep with summer.

Some days ebb, some days flow.  This mixtape works much the same way.  Give it a download or head over to 8tracks and listen!

Cousins,
Out On Town

Cousins - “Write Me A Song’

I have something I want you to hear before you head to bed tonight.

write me a song about bad wine and fast cars, something I can lean into

Something I’d like you to listen to at least twice.

write me a song without cadence or rhythm, just let it all hang out there

This has been my late night jam of late.

make me wonder what it means to be you

Again.  Play it again.

Cousins,
The Khyber

Cousins - “Khyber”

Weird Canada is one of my favorite music blogs.  Whenever I get a chance to spend some quality time with my google reader I know I’m gonna fall for something they’ve posted.

The Khyber is a non-profit, artist-run center in downtown Halifax.  It must be well-loved as 19 or so bands contributed a song to a compilation tape with proceeds going to future renovations of the 120+ year old building.

This Cousins' track is one of the new or unreleased tracks on the tape.  And damn, is it fantastic.
