LAYERED - a flamgirlant mixtape

Winter is all about layers.  Layers of clothing; layers of ice and snow; layers of blankets on your bed.  These layers all have a weight to them, physically and visually.  The music I’m drawn to in the darker, colder months of winter also feels like it carries a weight.  This mix is made up of songs that feel heavy.  By the end you’ll have bundled yourself in layers of melody and rhythm, harmony and distortion, hooks and reverb.

Download the mix or head over to 8tracks to stream it.

Cate Le Bon - “Falcon Eyed”

We’re nearing the end of January of 2012 and I’m surprised to say I’ve already started my “Best of 2012” draft.  Cate Le Bon’s latest release CYRK hit the shelves 1/18 and I can’t seem to put it down.

This woman does everything right.  We got the cool, unaffected delivery of Nico, the crooked melodies of Stephen Malkmus, and that borderline-snotty pop of The Kinks and a touch of that proggy art-house vibe that Lou Reed rocks so well.  Cate’s voice tip-toes atop all of this.  Her feather-light harmonies flutter along the haphazardly and shines so bright on those tracks that turn all trippy psych rock with droney organs and squirrely guitars.

Cyrk is not an album you want to sleep on, folks.

I’m a sucker for anything Nico-like and Cate Le Bon nails it.  CYRK is her sophomore effort and it doesn’t disappoint.  I have a wicked crush on this Welsh lady.

Cate Le Bon - “Digging Song”

While I had heard of Cate Le Bon I hadn’t really heard her before this morning.  Reblogging the new single from Cate Le Bon had me searching for a bigger fix.  I’m drawn to anything with a Velvet Underground feel and that goes to double when you can add Nico to the mix.  After a quick google, I bought her 2009 release Me Oh My.  I’ve had it on repeat all morning.

This track repeatedly stood out to me for a variety of reasons - total VU with Nico vibes, the harmonica and the lyrics.  Well, more specifically the articulation of lyrics. I keep hearing “dig” as “dick”.  Quite honestly, in this case of my infamous misheard lyrics, it totally works.

I don’t ever want to dick your heart away

Love that.  Getting your heart dicked around is not kosher.  I like how she just states it up front.  With that line alone I’m pretty sure Cate and I could be friends.

I dick all night, with tired eyes

Girl, have I been there!!  Now I just know we’d be friends. I dig her style.

But seriously, it’s a fantastic song.  Me Oh My is a stellar album.  I’m gonna have to get this on vinyl.  If you’re VU and Nico fan, I can’t recommend this enough. I’m sorry to have waited so long to jump on the Le Bon bandwagon, but I’m sure glad I caught up!
