Foxygen - “Make it Known”
This is just spectacular.
The leader of this Astoria, NY-based project Sam France evokes a young, brash Mick Jagger, throws in some Roxy Music-era Brian Eno, then swirls it on ice with some Roky Erickson. If that’s not rock n’ roll hyperbole, I don’t know what is. A music geek buddy of mine who works at a certain ‘major indie’ label passed me this band’s work saying, “This whole thing is wrecking me. A love letter to record collections.”
He’s right on - wondering if he’ll get this in the hands of his A&R team! This is raw talent; it deserves to be noticed. I instantly downloaded their entire catalogue - this track from amazing Take the Kids Off Broadway EP.
Finn Riggins - “Benchwarmers”
Feeling like a benchwarmer today as I’m stuck in my cubical instead of playing out in the sunshine on a spring day. All I can do is go “shimmy to the left, shimmy to the left, shimmy to the right” as I hit repeat on this video. Great energy in this song. Just the right amount of dancey pop with a rhythm that’ll get you moving your feet. And I’m loving the tone on that guitar. It’s a perfect song for a sunny spring day.
“Benchwarmers” is the title track from Finn Riggins’ Tender Loving Empire EP available on 10” colored vinyl on April 21st, 2012 for Record Store Day.
Dead Luke - “Paranoia Is A Flower Of The Mind”
There is a plate of potato chips sitting on the counter in the lunchroom. It was there at 8am this morning when I went in for my first cup of coffee. Just a plate holding about with about a 1/4 of a bag of Krunchers potato chips. It feels like a trap.
Dead Luke is a fellow Wisconsonite making some of the chillest psychedelia I’ve heard in a while. Reminds me a bit of Spiritualized with the echoey “oh yeahs” and layered jams. Not sure how I missed his 2011 release Meanwhile… In The Midwest. If you dig this as much as I do head over to Moon Glyph toute de suite and place your order as it’s a limited pressing of 500 copies.
3 1/2 - “Hipside”
When Rollo & Grady makes note of an artist to watch, you listen. In this case, at least 3 times.
Boyhood - “Heat”
Damn, do I love me some Canadian garage rock.
Listen to the full Boyhood EP on bandcamp.

Fists - “Stag”
What I wouldn’t give to be half-drunk on cheap beer in some tiny, low-ceilinged club swaying sweaty shoulder to sweaty shoulder with a throng of people a little to large for the room watching Fists perform this song.
Rock ‘n fucking roll.
Peggy Sue - “Yo Mama” (Daytrotter Session)
I’d like to introduce you to my latest band crush, Peggy Sue. This trio from Brighton UK are just knocking me out with their soul-folk. How on earth do they manage to be minimalist and over-the-top? Rosa and Katy’s intertwining harmonies are sweet yet their lyrics just slay me while Olly’s percussion just drives them straight into my heart. Rootsy, folky, a bit punky, a touch blusey giddily whirled up in a raw mess of guitar, drums and accordian. Oh yeah, I’m crushing hard.
Look for their debut full length Fossils and Other Phantoms out on Yep Roc Records June 1st. Pre-order it here. And while you’re waiting, download their Daytrotter session Always Kicked To The Curb In Love.
PS - They have a Tumblr!
